Avalanche
City will tour New Zealand this October, with
support from Benny
Tipene.
Dave Baxter (Avalanche City) and his touring band will bring the music from
recent album – We
Are For The Wild Places – to life on the tour of the same name;
across four dates taking in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and
Wellington.
“We Are For The Wild Places” recently debuted at
#3 on the Official Top 40 Albums Chart and the
album’s beautiful first single, ‘Inside Out’ has been a chart and radio
smash hit – it is currently #1 Airplay after five consecutive
weeks in the top spot; while the single also peaked at #1 on
the sales chart.
“We Are For The Wild Places” (mixed by Death Cab
For Cutie’s Chris Walla) is a mature and fitting follow-up to
Avalanche City’s debut album – “Our New Life
Above The Ground”, which spawned the Silver
Scroll-winning single, ‘Love Love Love’

It's been a quiet few weeks in terms of major music releases but it looks
like the dry spell is finally over with some highly anticipated albums from
Disturbed, Dr. Dre, Foals, Ghost and more due to drop this Friday!
So in no particular order, here are my Top Albums releasing
this week!
I recall the first time I ever heard Dr. Dre
on a track. It was 1999, I was 11 years old and han't yet discovered the
wonders of Hip Hop. From the moment I heard “Forgot About
Dre” I was hooked. Fast forward 16 or so years and Detox
still isn't out. It was beginning to seem like the long awaited Dre
album was the musical version of Big Foot.

In the first installment of our new weekly Thursday Throwback
blog, we're going to be taking a stroll down memory
lane and looking at some of the best songs and music videos of
yester-year!
There's nothing quite like the feeling you get when listening to an old song
you love, the way you somehow remember all the words, despite not having heard
the song for quite some time. The way the melody takes that oh so familiar path
yet still excites you after your hundredth listen.
The term “Musical Frisson” describes the chills and
goosebumps you get when you hear a track that speaks to your heart and soul. The
tracks below are some of my favourites that still give me the shivers to
this day!
Let's get started!

Being the Music Gorilla here at Mighty Ape means I listen to music all day
long and am constantly on the hunt for more so I thought I'd put together a
list of my most anticipated albums coming in the next few months. Without
further ado, let's jump right in head first and run through my list! (in no
particular order)
I'm going to go right ahead and say that 2015 has already trumped 2014 in
terms of music releases, with a tonne still to come before the year end!
Leon
Bridges – Coming Home – For me personally, there are few
artist in music that give me goosebumps when listening. Leon
Bridges is one of these people and has quickly become one of my most
played artists.
At a ripe age of only 25 it's clear that Leon Bridges possesses a soul and
talent far beyond his years and is making some of today's most timeless music.
One listen of his phenomenal track ‘Coming Home’ and I'm
sure you'll agree!

Whether you love or hate her, there's no denying the staying power of Madonna. She's been making music
for as long as I can remember and has somehow managed to evolve and stay
relevant with the times like so few artists from her generation have.
Through an almost uncountable amount of image changes and experimentation
with new sounds, Madonna has stayed at the very forefront of Pop Music and has
continued to gain new fans both old and young.
It hasn't been easy being a Madonna fan in New Zealand as the prolific Queen
of Pop has never made the journey across to our shores.

Being Mighty Ape's Music Gorilla means I see and hear a tonne of music
everyday. I'm constantly trying to keep up with all of the latest bands and
albums but every once in a while I like to go back and reminisce with some of
the classics.
Being a child of the 80's, my definition of classic may be a little off but
I just wanted to have a stroll down memory lane and find out what songs/videos
you folks love also!
Without further ado, let's run through my personal top 10 tracks!
10.) Patea Maori Club – Poi E

As it's New Zealand Music Month we wanted to shine a spotlight on some bands
that we think paved the way for other New Zealand music by introducing it to the
masses. Today the focus is on Kiwi legends Shihad and their
monumental rise as one of the biggest Rock exports to grace stages around
the world.
Formative Years
Back in 1988 when George Michael and Rick Astley ruled the New Zealand
charts, Shihad came into existence. Formed by Jon Toogood and Tom Larkin, their
original musical style drew heavy influences from Thrash Metal bands like
Metallica and Megadeth, although gradually evolving into a more popular modern
rock/pop-rock over the next decade. This change sparked a bevy of opening
performance slots for US rock acts as well as some solid reviews from
the press.
