On Wednesday, Alex and I, the Social Media Monkeys of Mighty Ape New Zealand, were fortunate
enough to be invited to a Nintendo Switch hands-on event where we had the
opportunity to play a number of different demo titles on Nintendo’s newest
console, the highly anticipated Nintendo
Switch.
Like many others we were both particularly hesitant to purchase the Switch,
be it on launch day or ever. However, after a solid two hours of testing out the
demo versions of the hybrid console, we were both jumping up and down with glee
and excitement.
The Switch is a solid piece of gaming technology, with the entire console
looking absolutely sleek both in and out of the docking station. The docking
mechanisms were fairly simply, making it easy to plug in and take out. It also
feels extremely comfortable to hold when undocked.

I stumbled across a link to an article about the 25th
anniversary of Super Mario Bros. this morning while browsing Twitter…
I mean working :P. Super Mario Bros. was released on September 13th
1985, and so celebrated 25 years of existence last Monday week (how did this
slip by us?). To put that in perspective, ACT MP David Garrett's
“passport” was still valid when this game first launched. It was a
long time ago. Does it make you feel old? :P
Super Mario Bros. is an undeniable classic. The main character Mario has gone
on to appear in 116 individual games! Super Mario Bros. was not the first
appearance of Mario, his video game debut was in 1981's Donkey Kong where he
was a carpenter known as Jumpman. He gained the name Mario in the
following year when he appeared in Donkey Kong Jr. He changed professions and
become the plumber that we've love in 1983's arcade game Mario Bros. This is
also the game that introduced Mario's brother Luigi.
So lets take a side-scrolling stroll down memory lane and reminisce for a
bit. Tell us which Mario game is your all time favourite, and we'll pick one
lucky monkey to score a copy of Super
Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Wii (competition now finished). Feel free to
share your favourite memories from the Mario franchise and any other relevant
and interesting facts that you can share :)
WINNER: Warren C. from Levin

We have begun a Nintendo
Wii and DS games sale for the weekend. This was supposed to start
tomorrow morning, but Gaz (being the generous guy that he is) flicked
the switch one day early. Give it up for Gaz!
As
I mentioned earlier in the week, I'm a bit of a geek for Nintendo stuff
(particularly Mario related stuff). I've got my eye on Super
Mario Galaxy 2, pity I no longer have access to a Wii console :/
Anyone willing to help me on that front? :P
The sale is here, and
our picks of the bunch are:
The Nintendo
Sale ends at midday on Monday, so don't monkey
around :P
I had the good fortune of spending last week in the land of the rising
sun, Japan. While my fellow monkeys were layering up and toiling away at
Mighty Ape HQ's warehouse and office I was catching the warm rays of summer in
Japan :P And warm it was, it averaged over 30 degrees during the day and in the
late 20s at night, mmmm. (By the way, I'm Che, just in case you
haven't figured that out already :P)
I've always had a fascination with Japan and Japanese culture since I was
young. I distinctly remember a parent coming to class when I was five years
old to talk about her recent visit to Japan. She taught us some origami and
had photos of Mount Fuji, Sumo wrestlers, bullet trains, and Japanese style
toilets; all really fascinating stuff to me as a child. I ended up studying
Japanese at high school and managed to go on a class trip for to Japan when
I was 15. It was my first big overseas trip, I hadn't seen much of the world
at that stage, suffice to say it was mind-blowing. I've been itching to get back
there for a few years and when some cheap flights came up recently I jumped at
the chance.
