Motivational Mondays: Shaun Johnson

Hey guys, I hope you're all up for a dose of Monday motivation! I spent my weekend at the NRL Nines and what a competition it was! It was spectacular to see some of the superstars of the game showcasing the talent and skill they have developed over years of training! It was a shame the Warriors didn't go on to win the comp but they still put on an awesome show for the crowd and a good time was had by all! Check out some of the highlights if you missed it!
I'm excited to see how the Warriors are going to go this year :D

One player that stood out for me was Shaun Johnson, not surprisingly he was also named the player of the tournament too. The captain of the Warriors looked phenomenal dancing through flailing defences, fending of opponents, putting big hits on, and his sheer acceleration and speed was exhilarating! It made me really

Johnson is a player I have been keenly following for a number of years now and I'm not the only one, in 2009 league great Andrew Johns commented: “I haven't been this excited about a player in a long time.”

If you're anything like me, Mondays can be one of the hardest days of the week! We all know what it's like, we know we should be at the gym, out for a run, preparing a healthy lunch or exercising… instead we often roll over and hit that snooze button. It's almost as if our body requires that much more motivation to do what is usually an easy task!

So to help get you guys ramping up and ready for a big week of life I've decided to start our new series; Motivational Mondays! Every Monday I'm going to have something different to motivate you, it could be a video, photo, or quote! So be sure to check in each week for your weekly dose of motivation!

Last week we launched the much anticipated Arnold Schwarzenegger Series! This being the case I only thought it would be appropriate that we received a little motivation from a the man himself!

Here's a motivational video based upon Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commencement Address at the University of Southern California in 2009. I've watched a few versions of this speech and this was by far my favourite! Full screen, HD and turn it up and get ready for an awesome 5 minutes!

Talmans Training Tuesdays: Getting started at the gym! Part 4 - Weight Loss supplements

Hey guys! I hope you're still keeping up with the training? I'm still going hard and I hope you are too :) Sorry I've missed the past 2 weeks – I hope you can forgive me! I have been planning something HUGE! Don't keep it quiet but we have over 400 new supplements launching this week!

Two weeks ago we talked about goal setting, routines and I shared a few tips. This week we are going to be looking at supplements. I'm sure a lot of you are more than slightly confused here so I hope I can help you out!

As it's summer and we are celebrating with 25–40% off our fat burners we will start here!

Fat burners and weight loss supplements aren't a magic pill/powder that you can take and expect to be skinny after running through the bottle or cycle. If you take this approach they will do very little for you except maybe make you feel a little bit better about yourself. These supplements are made to be used as part of a comprehensive exercise program and a healthy diet. They use substances which contain thermogenic properties, carnitines, appetite/craving satisfiers, mood enhancers and many other substances to get the job done. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program they will fast track your success and help you get where you want to be sooner rather than later. We must remember that without the journey, the destination isn't the same.

Happy New Years guys! I hope it was an awesome time! I hope even more though that you are ready for a big year – it's time to whip that body into submission :P

Just before Christmas we talked about preparing yourself for your first workout at your new gym! Today we are going to be looking at getting into a routine, plus a couple of other tips!

I always used to think that the longer I spent in the gym and the more often I went the better… not completely true. If I was training to be an elite athlete maybe – but as a recreational gym goer this isn't all it sounds.

Often when we start going to the gym we set ourselves unrealistic goals. We keep them up for a week or so but it takes at least a month to set a habit! So why don't you set yourself the goal of training 3–4 times a week (I prefer Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday – this gives my body a mid week break to recover and of course the weekend) for one hour at a time – including warm up + stretching. A routine like this isn't likely to burn you out but will give you a good introduction or re-introduction to gym life.

Last week we talked about what you should look for when selecting a gym. Today we are going to be talking all about the next step: preparing yourself for your first workout at your new gym!

One of the most important parts of training in my opinion is motivation. When we have drive we can overcome anything from sore muscles to early mornings. When on the hunt for motivation I recommend setting yourself some goals, what is your goal?

  • Weight loss?
  • Muscle building?
  • Muscle toning?
  • Fitness?
  • General health and well-being?

It could be anything! Just make sure you set yourself a S.M.A.R.T goal! Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound goal. This will help immeasurably when it comes to reaching your aims. My other piece of advise is to write it down – and look at it everyday for a week. I like to put mine in my bathroom when I do this but anywhere works :)

Now that you've got a bit of a goal in mind and you know where you're going, it's time to get yourself sorted for your first session. I recommend booking a personal trainer to set you up with a program. Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothing, as a CrossFitter I really like our CrossFit specific range be sure to check it out as it doesn't get any better than this! It is also essential that you turn up with a sweat towel, and a drink bottle. Be sure to have a good nights rest beforehand and show up with a positive attitude!

Talmans Training Tuesdays: Getting started at the gym! Part 1

Supplements & Vitamins

Today I wanted to start a mini-series and give you a bit of a walk through with what it takes to start resistance or weight training. We are going to be covering topics like; What should I look for in a gym? How often should I train? What supplements should I be taking? We will be doing this over a couple of days/weeks just so it doesn't get too long! I know it's going to be hard but please contain your excitement!

What should I look for in a gym? I personally have been dabbling in gyms since I was at high school and since then have found myself in a variety of different gyms. Some of my key tips to look for in a gym are:

  • First impressions – does the gym look atheistically pleasing? Are the staff friendly? Is there enough parking space?
  • What services do they offer – do they have a sauna? A tanning bed? Massages? Free programs?
  • Check the bathrooms – are they well maintained? Clean? Spacious?
  • How well equipped are they, do they have the equipment you need – a squat rack? Elliptical machine? Cross trainer? Dumbbells? Free weights? Is there a substitute you could use if they don't have your ideal?
  • How tidy is the gym – are there free weights lying around? Wipes to clean machines after use? Are other gym goers using sweat towels?
  • Speak to a member of the gym – are they friendly? Do they enjoy the place? Would they recommend it?
  • Take note of the music playing – is it going to get you in the zone or just annoy you?
  • Try to find out how full they get at peak times.

Or maybe you want to set up your own home gym? Check out our huge range of training equipment – we have everything you need to get yourself set up!

  • Price – how expensive is the gym? Do they offer referral discounts? How long is your contract? Do you have to pay extra for certain features or areas?

Now that I've kick started the thought process, don't be a wally – take your time searching around, try a few different gyms even if you don't think you'll like a particular one – you might be surprised!

Where are you currently training/looking to train? And no – that wasn't a rhetorical question!
I'll kick it off – I'm going to Crossfit North Harbour but also have a mini gym set up at home – and I'm loving it! :D Now it's your turn…

Welcome to the first installment of our new Fitness & Nutrition blog series today – Talman's Training Tuesdays!

We are heading into the summer months and I'm sure lots of you are going to be hitting the pavement, gym, cross trainer, pool in a last ditch effort to shed those last couple of kilos! As we hit the sunny sandy beach months ahead there is something within all of us that inspires us to go extra hard it seems. If you're anything like me, this only seems to last a couple of weeks before the lure of relaxing takes over and you settle for second best.

To get you off your bum and into your exercise why not try a pre-workout supplement? Pre-workouts are great when you need that extra edge to get you through a tough patch. The extra energy will not only give you the fuel you need to lift heavier, but also the mental sharpness and drive to get your body to where your mind wants it to be!
